Gaming in The Cloud
The ability to access media across multiple devices in an instant has been viewed as highly advantageous to those who need it. The days of sending and receiving data by duplicating resources are virtually over with Cloud technology. Sending data “through the Cloud” enables users to tap into a single resource and speeds up the process of streaming content.
What Does This Mean for Mobile?
Firstly, storing and accessing data can be managed remotely as opposed to internally. The need to patch an application because of existing problems can be done on-the-fly instead of the need to download an entire application update from the app store. Balance issues and fixes can be changed on the cloud and immediately reflect the application’s features.
Secondly, users can share content like never before. Open up a space that multiple users can access and push/pull documents, audio, video and resources quickly and efficiently.
No more USB transfers, no more email attachments and most importantly no more lost resources mixed in with the thousands of other resources a developer receives every day. This makes the job of a developer easier because access to content is readily available to everyone in one space.
How do Gaming Applications Benefit?
Gaming on mobile platforms has always had the issue of application sizes being overly large and updates taking too many steps to process. Cloud technology has helped gaming take a turn for the better. The ability to make app downloads small in size and have the content available as a separate entity has created a new development ideal.
OnLive and PlayStation Now are examples of gaming platforms using Cloud technology to stream video games to users without the hardware to power them.
PlayStation Now uses redesigned hardware – multiple ps3 units on a single, miniaturized board – to gain faster response times. It relies on the Cloud hardware to do all the rendering and processing work. The library of games would be able to run on consoles, tablets, and smartphones at equal efficiency.
Games are more widely available to everyone through “the Cloud”. Eventually, the need for multiple consoles and/or devices may not be necessary. The idea of one device running virtually everything could very well be a possibility; expensive but still possible.
Cloud technology saves time, money and power in every aspect. Gaming has and will greatly appreciate this through and through.
